DHAKA, Bangladesh -- The prime minister of Bangladesh has ordered an investigation after at least 30 people died in a stampede Sunday.

Thousands of people turned up at an abandoned mill to receive gifts of clothes and money from a rich businessman. The gifts were offered to celebrate the festival of Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan.

A wall collapsed as more than 10,000 people, mostly women and children, tried to force their way into a compound belonging to the businessman. Many others were injured.

The incident happened outside an abandoned jute mill, where the distribution was planned. The crowd surged into the compound as guards opened its gates, causing the stampede.

Two men distributing the clothes have been arrested as police investigate possible negligence.
