LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani police have arrested nine suspected al Qaeda members during a raid on a house in the city of Lahore.

The raid took place early Thursday morning with police commandos surrounding the compound. An exchange of fire followed before the police eventually stormed the building.

Agents from the American FBI and Pakistani police were involved in the joint operation.

Those arrested were Dr. Ahmad Javed Khawaja and eight of his relatives, including two naturalized U.S. citizens and one Canadian, sources told CNN.

Police said they believed the two Americans and the Canadian are members of al Qaeda and said they had been taken to an undisclosed location for questioning by the FBI.

In Washington, an FBI official told CNN that while the three may have been associated with al Qaeda, they did not appear to have prominent roles.

Police say up to 15 people may have escaped from the compound during the raid.

Among items recovered from the compound were a variety of books, photographs, computer discs, audio and video tapes, as well as al Qaeda training materials.

Five computers were also seized in the raid and will be checked for potential intelligence information.

Pakistani security forces have been working closely with the FBI to hunt down and detain suspected al Qaeda operatives based inside Pakistan.
