ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Police found a machine gun and grenades Tuesday on the side of a road where the Iranian president was scheduled to travel, authorities said.

Police received information that people were in a wooded area near a route Iranian President Mohammad Khatami was to take.

Authorities searched the area and found a bag on the side of the road containing a machine gun with 35 rounds and three grenades. Police were investigating.

Visiting heads of state are frequently taken to the area for a hilltop view of the city. Khatami eventually made the stop but was delayed because of the discovery.

Earlier Tuesday, a blast went off at a bus station in Rawalpindi, a city southwest of Islamabad, Pakistani officials said. At least eight people were injured and taken to hospitals, police said.

At a news conference with Zafarullah Khan Jamali, Pakistan's newly elected prime minister, Khatami said his country wants to work with its neighbors to improve security and stability in the region.

Jamali asked Khatami to help get India to the negotiating table to settle the decades-old Kashmir dispute through a vote by Kashmiris.

"We agreed that the Kashmir dispute should be resolved in keeping with the wishes of the people of Kashmir," Jamali said.

Pakistan has been demanding that India allow Kashmiris on both sides of the disputed border hold a plebiscite to decide whether a united Kashmir should join Pakistan or India.

Thousands have died in a 13-year insurgency in Indian-ruled Kashmir, where Muslim militants are battling for either outright independence or union with Islamic Pakistan.

Khatami told the news conference he has tried in the past to ease problems between the two South Asian nuclear neighbors and was ready to try again.

Khatami was scheduled Wednesday to visit Lahore where was to attend a public reception and have lunch with businessmen.

CNN Producer Syed Mohsin Naqvi contributed to this report.
