Myanmar arrests ex-leader's family

By CNN Producer Narunart Prapanya

YANGON, Myanmar (CNN) -- Myanmar police arrested four family members of the country's former leader Ne Win, the government announced Saturday, saying that the four were planning a coup.

Ne Win's son-in-law, Aye Zaw Win, and his three grandsons were taken into police custody, and the former leader's daughter was placed under house arrest, sources in Rangoon told CNN.

Ne Win's family members are considered to be troublemakers by Myanmar's military regime, which has ruled the country formerly known as Burma since 1988.

Ne Win, a former Burmese general, was in power from 1962 until 1988 and is blamed for plunging the country into isolation.

Although officially out of power, Ne Win has remained politically active from behind the scenes and is believed to still have loyal followers.

Myanmar is currently facing a struggle between its younger leadership that wishes to open up the country to more international investment opportunities, and an old guard that wants to remain isolated.
