U.S. Marines choppers in deadly collision
SINGAPORE (CNN) -- Two U.S. Marine helicopters were damaged and a local technician was killed after an airfield accident in Singapore, the Pentagon said. No U.S. casualties were reported aboard the two CH-53 'Sea Stallion' Marine Corps helicopters, a statement from the U.S. Navy said. The rotors of the two helicopters touched as the aircraft passed one another while on runways at Paya Lebar Air Base on Tuesday. The spinning blades shattered, and the debris struck a Singaporean ground technician, U.S. military officials said. The names of the pilots and the technician were not immediately released. Paya Lebar, a former civilian airport, was converted by the Singapore government to military use about 20 years ago, and hosts U.S. and other international military for support and training exercises. The Sea Stallion is a medium lift helicopter and is designed to transport personnel, supplies and equipment. The helicopter has been used extensively in the U.S.-led anti-terrorism campaign in Afghanistan. |
