Armed gang nets six million euros

Euros
Police estimate the gang escaped with six million euros

PARIS, France -- A policeman has been wounded and six million euros ($5 million) stolen after an armed gang robbed a money depot in central Paris.

The incident happened on Monday when up to 15 men used explosive to break into a euro storage warehouse.

Following a pre-dawn shoot-out with police, they managed to grab six bags of cash which police estimated contained one million euros each.

One officer was shot but was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured. He was being treated at a local hospital.

The depot is in the historic Montmartre quarter of the French capital.

The euro currency was introduced across all but three European countries on January 1 amid tight security.

On the day of the launch, 90,000 euros ($79,720) were stolen from a bank near the Spanish city of Zamora.

Last month, the driver of a German armoured truck stole up to 20 million euros ($17.5 million) after threatening his co-driver.

The truck was delivering the cash to a bank in central Frankfurt when the 23-year-old French driver pulled into a car park and pulled a gun on his colleague.
