Car bomb explodes in Madrid
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A car bomb exploded near the offices of Spain's largest oil company, Repsol, in the early hours of Monday morning, causing some property damage but apparently not causing any casualties. The bomb exploded about 1 a.m. Monday (7 p.m. Sunday EDT), breaking windows in Repsol offices and also damaging vehicles parked nearby. There were no immediate reports of injuries or any immediate claim of responsibility. The bomb came less than two days after another car bomb exploded Saturday in Spain's northern Basque region. That bomb was preceded by a telephone warning to authorities, claiming responsibility for the Basque separatist group ETA. That explosion happened around midday in the town of Gexto, near the city of Bilbao. The warning call came about 45 minutes before the blast. ETA is blamed for the death of one person this year, and for the killings of some 800 people in Spain since 1968. It was in that year that ETA began a violent campaign for Basque independence. ETA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States government and is an outlawed group in Spain. A recent series of police raids in Spain and neighboring France, which has long been used as a rear-guard base by ETA activists, has led to the arrests of more than 70 suspected ETA members or collaborators this year by the two countries. |
