His attorney told CNN immediately after the closed-door hearing in Garzon's chambers that his client had expressed his innocence during the session.

Kalaje Zouaydi was arrested in Madrid on Tuesday. Police accuse him of being a key financier in Osama bin Laden's terrorist network. (Full story)

Authorities say Kalaje Zouaydi siphoned money from his Madrid real estate development company and sent it to Islamic extremists in various countries, including the United States and Germany.

They allege some of the funds went to people close to Mohamed Atta, a September 11 suicide hijacker aboard the first plane to strike the World Trade Center.
