Scores rescued from gas platformLONDON, England (CNN) -- More than 100 people have been airlifted from a natural gas platform in the North Sea after it was struck by a fishing vessel, the British coast guard said. There were 21 people aboard the damaged trawler, which was badly holed but not taking on water. There were 128 people on the gas platform of whom 110 were evacuated to a nearby gas tanker by two Royal Air Force rescue helicopters. Eighteen stayed on the platform. There were no reports of injuries. The gas platform -- 27 miles from Bridlington, England, off the East Yorkshire coast -- had been shut down for maintenance work when the accident took place on Wednesday. |
