Fire at Israeli Embassy in Paris

The Israeli Embassy in Paris caught fire early Thursday.

PARIS, France (CNN) -- The Israeli Embassy in Paris caught fire early Thursday, officials said. There was no immediate explanation as to the cause of the blaze, and officials said there were no reports of injuries.

Elie Barmavi, the Israeli ambassador to France, said it was "too early to know what happened exactly," but it appeared to him that the building was "totally finished."

"It was the middle of the night so nobody was there, apart from one guard," Barmavi said. "We have no injured, which is the bright side of the story."

Barmavi said the fire started at about 1:30 a.m. (7:30 p.m. Wednesday ET) and spread quickly through the building.

"It's too early to say what happened," he said. "The police will start the investigation tomorrow."

A spokesman for the French Minister of the Interior described the blaze as "an important fire" and said the interior minister and French prime minister were at the scene. Barmavi said he also spoke with President Jacques Chirac, who sounded "very worried."
