'Spiderman' scales Paris heights
PARIS, France -- A Frenchman, calling himself "Spiderman" and wearing the movie star's trademark tight blue and red bodysuit, has scaled one of the tallest skyscrapers in Paris, adding it to his worldwide climbing conquests. Alain Robert, 39, used only his hands and feet to climb the 150-metre (490ft) Franklin Tower in about half an hour on Tuesday morning. The Frenchman is famous for his exploits that have often resulted in arrests and minor charges of criminal trespass. Without using any climbing gear or safety equipment, he has scaled some of the world's tallest buildings including the Eiffel Tower, the Sears Tower in Chicago and the Empire State Building in New York.
"The character of Spiderman is interesting because he is a hero of the modern age, a kind of new Robin Hood," Robert, who says he climbs for publicity, told Reuters. "I can tell you that I share the same kind of philosophy as the Spiderman, if a comic-book character can be said to have a philosophy." The blockbuster "Spiderman" broke U.S. box office records with a $115 million opening when it was released in May, making its hero, Tobey Maguire, a worldwide celebrity. |
