Six arrested in UK terror swoop
LONDON, England -- Police in Britain have arrested six men under the Terrorism Act 2000. The men, all in their 20s or 30s, were arrested on Wednesday in a joint operation by the Anti-Terrorist Branch and MI5, Scotland Yard said in a statement. The men are being questioned at police stations across London. It is understood that some of those arrested are being questioned in connection with alleged fundraising for international terrorism. Three other men were arrested for alleged criminal offences and two others for alleged immigration offences. A Scotland Yard statement, issued on Thursday, said the arrests were part of extensive on-going inquiries by the Anti-Terrorist Branch. One of the men arrested for alleged criminal offences was released on police bail to return to a central London police station in October. The other suspects remain in custody. Meanwhile, police said searches were being carried out at the addresses and two storage units in London. It is understood some property has been recovered but no guns or explosives. Details of the operation came as an unemployed computer programmer appeared before a London court accused of offences under UK anti-terrorism legislation. Muhammed Abdulah Azam, 32, faces charges under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000. (Story)
