Fashion tyres to leave their mark
By CNN's Tammy Oaks
LONDON, England -- Furry dice and leopard skin seat covers may be superceded as the ultimate car fashion accessory with the planned arrival of personalised tyre designs. Drivers will soon be able to burn up the road with designer tyres. That's right, the humble tyre that has been black since 1888 is getting a make-over. Continental Tyres has created a new tyre, Personalityres, that allows drivers to express their personalities through a selection of prints, patterns and colours. Communications Manager Fiona Pinkney told CNN: "The tyres were designed with consumers in mind. Today's consumers like to individualise their belongings.
"People use cars to express themselves and we thought they could have fun personalising their tyres." The designs are made possible by using silica instead of carbon black in the rubber compound. Since silica can be dyed any colour the design options are limitless and because the designs run through the tyre the pattern won't rub off. In what Continental hopes to be a must-have accessory of the future, the Personalityre offers something for everyone -- from the football fan to the patriotic. Potential designs include the UK's Union Jack, camouflage, stripes, fluorescent pink, dogtooth and leopard prints. For the nostalgic there will be a retro design, Quadrophonic, that harks back to the '60s Mod scene and a hippy design, Woodstock, that revisits the '70s. The concept is still in its early development stages, but Continental has received very positive feedback -- even design suggestions -- from the public, Pinkney said. Prices have not been set yet but Pinkney said the tyres would cost a little more than Continental's normal type, which range from $45 - $300.
