Health tests ordered on Milosevic
THE HAGUE, The Netherlands -- U.N. war crimes tribunal judges have ordered a psychiatric report on Slobodan Milosevic amid growing concern that the mental strain of his trial is taking its toll. Milosevic, 61, who has suffered from flu, exhaustion and high blood pressure, was unable to attend court on Tuesday because of poor health. Now the trial has been postponed for the rest of this week, Reuters reports. The former Yugoslav president, charged with crimes against humanity in Croatia and Kosovo, and genocide in Bosnia during the 1990s, is conducting his own defence at The Hague. But poor health has halted proceedings five times in nine months. Doctors have told him to rest regularly because of high blood pressure. A statement issued on Wednesday by the panel of three judges hearing the case said: "The trial chamber hereby orders the (court) registrar to obtain and provide to the Trial Chamber within 14 days a written psychiatric report." The judges also asked a cardiologist to report on Milosevic's likely future health and ability to attend court. In August the judges said they were concerned Milosevic's health could delay Europe's biggest war crimes trial since World War II. It began in February and was originally expected to last two years.
