LONDON, England (CNN) -- Scotland Yard said Saturday that authorities have arrested three men suspected of being terrorists.

The Sunday Times newspaper reports they were allegedly planning an attack against the London Underground subway system.

The men were arrested Monday and Tuesday in London under Section 57 of Terrorism Act 2000 for "possession of articles for the preparation, instigation and commission of terrorism acts," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

They are to appear in court Monday and are being held in London.

The men were described as being of North African origin, unemployed, with no fixed addresses in the United Kingdom.

Last week, British Prime Minister Tony Blair warned that the United Kingdom is not immune to terrorist attack and urged the public to be vigilant. (Full story)

He also said that the government could not close down every site threatened by terrorists because that "would be doing their job for them."

"If a terrorist thought that all he had to do to shut down the travel industry, for example, was to issue a threat against our airports, we really would be conceding defeat in the war against terrorism," Blair said.

Earlier this month, Interpol Secretary Ronald Noble warned that al Qaeda operatives were preparing simultaneous attacks in several countries. (Full story)

"All intelligence experts are agreed that al Qaeda is preparing a major terrorist operation, simultaneous attacks that would not target the United States alone but several countries at the same time," Noble said.

The London Undergound, also known as "The Tube," is the world's oldest underground mass-transit system, according to the company's Web site. Its first line opened in 1863.

The Tube has grown into a network of 275 stations connected by 253 miles of railway that carries about 3 million passengers each day, the site said.
