Denmark extends Chechen's custody
COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- A Chechen aide wanted by Moscow for alleged "terror" crimes has had his detention in Denmark extended by a further nine days. Akhmed Zakayev, an aide to fugitive Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, was taken into custody by Danish police at the request of Russian prosecutors when he attended a Chechen conference in Denmark on October 30. "Akhmed Zakayev must still be detained until December 5 as the conditions for a detention remain valid," a Danish court judge told reporters. Russia's relations soured with Denmark when the Danish government refused to stop the Chechen exiles' conference days after the Moscow theatre siege. Danish police said they originally arrested Zakayev after receiving sufficient proof from Russia that he was a suspect in a series of "terror" attacks between 1996-1999. Russia has also said he was suspected of having taken part in the planning of the taking of hundreds of hostages at a Moscow theatre on October 23. But Danish authorities have said documents submitted by Moscow in support of the extradition request draw no link between Zakayev and the 58-hour theatre siege in which 128 hostages died, Reuters reported. The Danish Justice Ministry has given Russian authorities until November 30 to submit evidence on its extradition request. Reuters contributed to this report.
