Stress relief Indian style
BANGALORE, India (CNN) -- Letting off steam by deep breathing and a good yoga stretch could help you and your business, says an Indian meditation expert. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar began teaching a combination of meditation with yoga and a breathing technique called Sudarshan Kriya in 1982. He says it has millions of followers and is taught in more than 100 countries. Now Bangalore's Art of Living Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has updated the 5,000-year old technique to benefit business people. "There's an urgent need to address this issue of mental and emotional stress," said Shankar. "Today so much violence in society is because of the stress." To help reduce the pressures of modern business life, the cost of the course is based on what you can pay. More than 300 companies worldwide have sent staff on the foundation's courses. Foundation chairman Arun Madhavan said: "In this workshop we bridge them together, we unite their minds, we bridge the barriers, and we say: 'let off the steam and get on the team.' "From the chairman to the doorman, the knowledge touches them in some way or another." One advocate is trader Mawahib Shaibani from the Dubai office of international brokerage Merrill Lynch. She said at first she was sceptical that a breathing technique could help her relax. "I used to be so tense. I'd be getting so angry, shouting, screaming, pushing around to get my orders through. Now when I realise I'm getting tense I just breathe and I calm down. I realise that I'm much more focused and much more productive."
