* First event was the 1923 English FA Cup final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United known as the "White Horse" final because mounted policeman George Scorey drove back thousands of fans who has spilled onto the pitch. * First Rugby League Cup final held in 1929. Widnes beat Dewsbury 13-2. * The first winners of NFL's American Bowl launched in 1986 were Chicago Bears who beat Dallas Cowboys 17-6. * First Football League Cup final held 1967. Queens Park Rangers beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2. * England's 100th match was in 1989 when they beat Yugoslavia 2-1. * England's first Wembley defeat by foreign opposition in 1953 when they lost 6-3 to Hungary, inspired by Ferenc Puskas.
* Rugby Union's Five Nations Championship came to Wembley for the first time in 1998. * Wembley has hosted six European Cup finals. * Wembley's most memorable game was in 1966 when England beat West Germany 4-2 in the World Cup final. * Muhammed Ali, then Cassius Clay, hit the canvas at Wembley in 1963, but got back up to beat British heavyweight Henry Cooper there in 1963. * Evangelist preacher Billy Graham held a Wembley convention in 1966. * First rock concert held at Wembley was in 1972 and featured Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Gary Glitter and Screaming Lord Sutch. * Other rockers to have appeared include: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Status Quo; The Who; Michael Jackson. * Sir Bob Geldof launched the Live Aid Concert in 1985 to raise money for the Third World. First band on were Status Quo. * The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert in 1988 was broadcast from Wembley to more than 72 countries. * The last soccer international at the old Wembley was on October 7, 2000. Germany beat England 1-0. |
