Pentagon selling precision bombs to IsraelWASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon has notified Congress it plans to sell Israel 1,000 units of Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAMS, a 2,000-pound precision bomb used by the U.S. Air Force and Navy to avoid killing civilians who may be close to military targets. The proposed $27 million sale of the Boeing-made bomb kits would follow a 1999 initial sale of 700 JDAMS to Israel In other proposed arms sales to key U.S. allies in the region, the Pentagon said it would upgrade 30 Apache helicopters flown by the United Arab Emirates with advanced radars, target acquisition systems and Hellfire missiles. The Boeing-made Apache is a front-line anti-tank helicopter used widely by the United States and its allies. Congress also was notified the United States will sell the Persian Gulf nation of Oman two F-16-mounted reconnaissance systems that will used to monitor airspace over the Strait of Hormuz. |
