Four Israelis killed in West Bank

HEBRON, West Bank (CNN) -- Four Israelis were killed at Hebron Friday when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on two cars driving along a road used by settlers, Israeli officials said.

One person was moderately injured and two others lightly injured, according to ambulance services.

Israeli authorities said there was a single shooting incident in which both cars were fired on as they drove along the road used by Jewish settlers and Israeli troops. The cars fled in separate directions.

A settlement spokesman described the gunfire as drive-by shootings, saying Palestinians pulled up next to the cars along a 4 kilometer strip of the road.

A father, a mother, and a son from a settlement near Jerusalem were killed in one car. A settler from Hebron was killed in the second car and two other people were wounded.

The spokesman said the road south of Hebron and is used principally by settlers and the Israeli army.

Early Friday, two metal workshops in Gaza City were mined and blown up by Israeli forces, injuring four people, Palestinian security sources said. Israel said the workshops were used to produce Qassam rockets.

An Israeli bulldozer, accompanied by tanks and jeeps, entered an eastern neighborhood of the city, the sources said. After destroying the facilities, the Israelis withdrew.

The two shops belonged to members of the same extended family, sources said.

Other developments

  • In Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces said an explosion went off close to a military bus traveling along on the Karni-to-Netzarim route. There were no casualties but the bus was damaged.
  • At Qalqilya on the West Bank, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said one Palestinian had been shot dead. The Israel Defense Forces also confirmed the death and said the incident is under investigation.
  • IDF forces said an antiaircraft shell was fired into Israel from Lebanon Friday morning. No injuries were reported.
  • In Tel Aviv, an Israeli hurt last week in a suicide bombing died of his wounds, bringing to five the number killed in that attack.
