Coalition jets strike Iraqi target
MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Florida (CNN) -- Coalition aircraft monitoring Iraq's southern no-fly zone bombed a military site early Monday, U.S. Central Command said. Central Command said aircraft targeted an Iraqi air defense command and control facility about 1 a.m. EDT. Precision-guided weapons were used in the attack, which was in response to hostile Iraqi acts against coalition aircraft, Central Command said. Iraq had no immediate reaction. The last coalition strike in Iraq's southern no-fly zone was against a military communications facility July 28. Central Command reports 70 incidents of Iraqi surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery fire against coalition aircraft this year. Anti-Iraq coalition forces established the no-fly zones to protect Kurds in the north and Shiite Muslims in the south after the Persian Gulf War. The United States and Britain say the United Nations has granted them authority to enforce the no-fly zones. Iraq does not recognize the zones. |
