TEL AVIV, Israel (CNN) -- A suicide bombing was foiled Friday just blocks from the U.S. and French embassies after a man wearing a vest with explosives set off a metal detector at a crowded beachfront cafe, fled and then was captured before he could detonate the device, U.S. and Israeli officials said.

The man, described as a Palestinian, was stopped by a security guard at the cafe after the metal detector went off. He screamed and ran out of the restaurant, past the U.S. Embassy, prompting a chase along Tel Aviv's main seaside promenade, U.S. officials said.

These officials said security guards from the U.S. embassy wrestled the would-be bomber to the ground and called Israeli police, who arrested him. Officials said the man was wearing a vest with explosives when he was captured.

French embassy security guards also had reported the man's suspicious behavior to police. The U.S. and French embassies are within blocks of each other along the seashore lined with hotels, restaurants and bars.

U.S. officials said they were initially concerned the bomber was targeting the embassy, but they said Israeli police determined the cafe was the target.

Police said they took the man into custody around 8:30 p.m. and managed to disarm him of his explosives. They said it was not immediately clear why the man did not blow himself up when he was being chased -- as do most suicide bombers who are discovered before detonating their devices.
