Clash at refugee camp kills 6 PalestiniansIDF says it responded to attack
GAZA CITY, Gaza (CNN) -- At least six people were killed and more than 50 were injured Thursday when three Israeli tank shells hit a crowded refugee camp in Rafah, Gaza, Palestinian sources said. The Israel Defense Forces said that Palestinians fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli forces operating in the area. "The terrorists are using civilian homes in the area for cover," the IDF said in a statement. "After being fired upon, Israeli soldiers returned fire to the source of the gunfire." A Palestinian witness in Rafah also told CNN that Palestinian gunmen fired at an Israeli tank before the Israelis responded with tank shells. Witnesses report people were hit by shrapnel as a result of the shelling. Sporadic gunfire continues between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen. The shells hit at least one house and a school in a crowded refugee area known as Block O, the sources said. The area is in southern Gaza near the border with Egypt. (Map) Palestinian sources and a United Nations refugee official said there are reports of up to seven deaths. The Associated Press reported the emergency room at Rafah Hospital was overflowing. "I was cooking for my children, when suddenly there was the sound of a tank shelling and there were explosions all around," Naifa Abu Jazzer, 40, told the AP from hospital emergency room. Jazzer's face and body were covered with blood, according to the AP. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said the Palestinian Authority condemns the violence and demands immediate international protection for the Palestinians.
