Israeli-Palestinian clashes in Nablus follow arrests

NABLUS, West Bank (CNN) -- An elite Israeli military unit entered a Palestinian refugee camp Wednesday and arrested two wanted Palestinians, triggering a gun battle between the Israeli forces and Palestinians in the area, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The IDF said its forces entered the Balata refugee camp, acting on intelligence and security information, to arrest the two men -- both described as members of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement -- who Israel accuses of plotting suicide bombings.

The Israeli soldiers went to the building where the men were hiding and took them into custody, as well as three other men there.

"The other three people were arrested because they were in the same building. They were arrested and interrogated to see if they have any connection to the other two men," an IDF statement said.

As the troops were leaving, Palestinian gunmen opened fire from "a few different directions" and activated an explosive device at the entry of the building where the Israeli forces were exiting, the IDF said. The Israeli soldiers fired back.

There were no reports of casualties, the IDF said. The Israeli military identified one of the men arrested as Riad Marshood, a senior Tanzim activist who Israel says was involved in planning a number of suicide bombings.

Palestinian sources said the Israeli forces left an explosives-laden car in the camp that exploded after they left, wounding 14 Palestinians, including two seriously.

The IDF said that is not true. It confirmed there was a "big explosion" north of the camp but the cause of the explosion was not immediately known and added that it has nothing to do with the incident and that none of their forces was near the area at the time.
