Peace Corps pulls Jordan volunteers
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- After evaluating the security situation in Jordan, the U.S. Peace Corps decided to suspend its program in the Middle East country, according to a statement posted on its Web site. Staff will continue to operate the Peace Corps office in Jordan.
Saturday's announcement comes just days after the U.S. State Department issued a warning for Americans traveling to Jordan and approved the voluntary departure of dependents and nonessential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Amman. Security concerns have been heightened in Amman since October 28, when Laurence Foley, an official with the U.S. Agency for International Development, was shot and killed near his home. No suspects have been identified publicly. "The safety and security of our volunteers is the highest priority of the Peace Corps," Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez said in a statement on the Web site. "The Jordanian government has been extremely supportive of Peace Corps volunteers and programs in their country. We value the relationship we have established and look forward to returning volunteers to Jordan in the near future."
