Kuwait: Iraqi ship fired on patrol

Story Tools

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (CNN) -- An Iraqi vessel opened fire on a Kuwaiti coast guard patrol near the northern Kuwaiti Island of Warba Tuesday, the Interior Ministry said.

"Two boats from the coast guard were on a routine patrol in the northern area near the Warba island when an Iraqi boat, which happened to be in the area, started shooting at them," said an interior ministry official, quoted by the official Kuwaiti News Agency.

Nobody was hurt in the shooting but a member of the coast guard was slightly injured when the two Kuwaiti boats bumped into each other after the shooting.

The statement did not give the type of Iraqi vessel.

Ties between Kuwait and Iraq have been severed since the 1991 Gulf War that liberated the small oil-rich state from a seven-month Iraqi occupation.

The borders between the two countries are closed and monitored by the United Nations.
