JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli soldiers operating in Gaza early Tuesday shot and killed a man after an explosive device was detonated and Palestinians opened fire on the Israeli troops, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The soldiers were searching near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza when they were attacked, the IDF said. Yassin al Ra, identified by the IDF as a wanted member of Hamas, was seen throwing blocks at Israeli soldiers from the top of a building. The IDF said soldiers fired warning shots and tried to arrest al Ra, but he fled and was shot. According to the IDF, pipe bombs, a Kalashnikov assault rifle and ammunition were found next to his body. It has has been labeled by the U.S. State Department as a terrorist organization. West Bank violenceOn Monday, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian woman and a man in separate incidents in the West Bank, Israelis and Palestinians reported. Palestinians said the woman was a mother of seven and the man was mentally disabled. Israeli military sources said that in one of those incidents, a car was fired on after IDF forces spotted it being driven in a way that made them suspicious. The city was under Israeli-imposed curfew when the soldiers fired on the car. Israeli sources said the soldiers opened fire on the car and a woman who was a passenger was killed. Palestinian sources said Rehana Kelanee, 40, was shot about 5:30 p.m. Monday when the car in which she was riding failed to stop for Israeli troops in Nablus. The sources said a relative at the wheel did not hear an Israeli order to stop the car. Kelanee, who had seven children, was seriously wounded and died shortly afterward a nearby hospital, the sources said. In a separate incident, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said a 30-year-old mentally disabled man was shot and killed. Mustafa Muhammed El Kuwa, 30, was killed while walking near the Jewish settlement of Enav, near the West Bank village of Kfar Anapta, west of Tulkarem, Palestinian sources said. According to neighbors, El Kuwa's daily routine was to wave a Palestinian flag and walk the same route from his village to the settlement. The IDF was conducting searches in the area. Israeli military sources said a Palestinian whose behavior made them suspicious approached an IDF unit near Enav about 12:30 p.m. They asked him to identify himself, but he ran away. Israeli troops ran after him, and warning shots were fired, but the man did not stop and was fatally wounded, the source said. IDF personnel gave first aid after the shooting, but the man died, IDF sources said. Palestinians report woman killedPalestinians on Sunday reported a fourth incident in which they said a Palestinian woman was shot dead and her three sons were wounded Sunday by Israeli soldiers in Gaza. Nahla Aqel, 41, was walking with her sons, ages 17, 15 and 5, near the southern Gaza town of Rafah in the evening when the soldiers opened fire, the sources said. Israeli military sources said Israeli soldiers in the area had fired on a group of armed Palestinians as they approached a fence surrounding the Jewish settlement of Katif, in an apparent attempt to infiltrate the settlement. Israeli officials did not confirm the details of the Palestinian report -- but said they were investigating the incident.
