Rula Amin: Authorities probe Yemen killings
SAN'A, Yemen (CNN) -- Authorities in Yemen say an Islamic extremist has confessed to killing three Americans and wounding a fourth at a hospital in southern Yemen on Monday. CNN Correspondent Rula Amin spoke Tuesday to CNN Anchor Leon Harris via videophone from the Yemeni capital about the investigation. AMIN: ... The Yemeni foreign minister told us that the attacker, whom the Yemeni authorities here describe as [an] Islamic militant, has told these investigators that he did this because he believed that [the] American missionaries were Christians trying to convert Muslims and that he wanted ... to be closer to God. However, this is not enough of an answer [for] the Yemeni authorities [or] U.S. officials. They are trying to determine [whether] this [was] an isolated incident or ... part of a larger scheme. So far, there is no link established to al Qaeda, but of course [authorities] suspect this might be a group [that is] targeting foreigners, Americans and local secular opposition leaders. One of [the opposition leaders] was assassinated on Saturday. [On Tuesday morning], U.S. investigators were down in Jibla, where the [killings] took place. ... They evacuated most of the American missionaries who work in the Baptist hospital. Also the pharmacist [injured Monday] was evacuated from that hospital to the capital. One of the bodies of the victims, Martha Myers, 57 years old, was also brought on ... the way to the United States. ... The families are expected also to arrive here. But two of the victims will be buried in Jibla. That is according to their will, we are told.
