HALIFAX, Canada -- Disabled yacht Amer Sports Too has arrived in Halifax after a harrowing few hours in a massive storm at the end of a 200 metre tow rope.

The Volvo Ocean Race yacht, dismasted on Wednesday, was towed the last 130 miles by a Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker.

Skipper Lisa McDonald said, "One of the most welcome sights I have ever seen was that ship looming out of the fog."

However, Amer Sports Too did not beat the storm on Friday and winds intensified to speeds of 58 to 60 knots.

"It was a very scary time. We were surfing virtually out of control down the waves at 24-16 knots then coming to a shuddering halt in the troughs, the tow line slack in the water.

"Then the tow line came taut again and we were pulled up the wave and the proves started again."

The yacht arrived at Halifax early on Saturday under its own power but still escorted by the icebreaker.

The all-female crew was roughly 400 miles south east of Halifax, Nova Scotia, when the rig fell on Wednesday. No one was injured in the incident.

Amer Sports Too hopes to find a ship to carry her to Europe after losing her mast on leg seven of the race.
