Diabetic to sail Around Alone

Dennis: 'I am a person with a dream who never lost sight of the dream'

NEWPORT, Rhode Island -- Yachtsman John Dennis will compete in the 2002-2003 Around Alone race, becoming the first diabetic to enter the 28,000-mile yachting marathon.

"More people have gone into space than have sailed around the world single-handed -- and nobody has done it as a diabetic," Dennis said.

This journey has been a life-long dream for Dennis, who told his father in 1958 he would sail solo non-stop around the world. "My father's comment was 'that is a bold statement,'" he said.

Dennis, 57, was devastated when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes -- formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult onset -- eight years ago.

"My dreams of entering this race were dashed," he said. "But I eventually realised that, as long as I consistently monitored my blood sugar levels and followed my doctor's instructions, I did not have to limit my life."

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, race organiser, said: "Around Alone is the greatest mental and physical challenge in any sport. This is the first time a skipper with diabetes has been able to compete.

"This is a fine example of the personal sacrifice and determination required to sail around the world alone."

Diabetes is a disease characterised by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetics must maintain stable blood sugar levels -- which requires consistent monitoring and following a strict diet and meal schedule.

Dennis, whose wife also has diabetes, will use his laptop to record his glucose levels and send them to his doctor via satellite.

Around Alone is a single-handed ocean race held every four years since 1982. The eight-month, five-leg race begins and ends in the United States.

He will be sponsored by Bayer, which came onboard as a sponsor of Dennis' campaign on the same day he was going to call it quits due to a lack of funds.

The Around Alone starts from New York City, New York on September 15.

"As skipper of the Ascensia yacht, I hope my story will inspire others to live their lives, not their diabetes," Dennis said.
