Nélias shines at Fecamp Grand Prix

FECAMP, France -- Jean Luc Nelias in Belgacom has won both races on the opening day of the Grand Prix de Fecamp on the north-east coast of France.

The closest challenge came from Loick Peyron in Fujicolor, the current leader of the Grand Prix circuit, which finished second in both races.

This is the final event of the ORMA 9 Telecom Grand Prix circuit and the last chance to see the 18.28-metre (60ft) trimarans racing before the start of the single-handed Route du Rhum transatlantic race in November from St Malo to Guadeloupe.

Nelias had a disappointing start of the season when a dismasting put him out of the first two grand prix races.

Fellow competitor Franck Cammas' Groupama broke her mast yesterday during practice and was unable to compete, leaving seven ORMA 60 trimarans on the start line.

Several of the newest boats expected to be racing in the Route du Rhum in November are still having problems and so could not make it to Fecamp.

Alain Gautier's Foncia and Michel Desjoyeaux's Geant are still sorting out their replacement masts while Lou Roucayrol's Banque Populaire is having major structural repair work on her beams.

The Grand Prix finishes on September 15.
