Fossett on track to reclaim record
RAMSGATE, England -- American adventurer Steve Fossett has made a good start in his attempt to reclaim the Round Britain and Ireland sailing record. Sailing the 38m (125ft) maxi-catamaran PlayStation, Fossett and his 14-member crew are less than 24 hours from port and breaking the record of 4 days, 17 hours, 4 minutes and 23 seconds set about six weeks ago by Maiden 2. Fossett had held the record for the 1,796 mile course since 1994. PlayStation had averaged 18.09 knots since the start from Ramsgate Harbour on Sunday, leaving a target speed of just 12.88 knots for the remaining 600 miles "So far there have been few problems. A broken winch was readily repaired by the crew, as was a batten problem in the mainsail. Sailing winds have been excellent and at one point we were flying a hull," Fossett said. Gales are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. Fossett is expecting some fast downwind sailing until they reach the Channel. "Today's forecast shows good winds until Thursday -- but then there are possible headwinds to slow us up when we reach the English Channel," Fossett said on Tuesday. Fossett holds numerous records, including the trans-Atlantic and trans-Mediterranean crossings.
