Marine items go under the hammer
LONDON, England -- A collection of 24 marine paintings owned by legendary American Olympic yachtsman Glen Foster is to be sold at auction in London. The late Foster won a bronze medal for the United States at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and just two weeks before he died from cancer in October 1999, he won the 5.5-metre Scandinavian Gold Cup for the third time. The collection, which will go under the hammer at Bonhams in January, includes a set of four oil paintings -- each estimated at £30,000-50,000 ($47,700 - $79,500) -- by Arthur Wellington Fowles. The paintings are believed to have been commissioned by James Ashbury, who mounted several attempts to win back the America's Cup trophy for Britain, to commemorate his yacht Cambria. Another valuable set of pictures in the Foster collection is a series of six oils on canvas by Dominic Serres, Sr. depicting the taking of Belle Isle in 1761, which are together estimated at £120,000-180,000. The Foster Collection also includes 'The King's Cup,' a fine silver-gilt presentation tankard, the first and most prestigious of three racing cups presented to the club by King George IV -- the first patron of the Royal Yacht Club. The trophy was made by John Bridge for London silversmiths Rundell Bridge & Rundell in 1827 and weighs 99 ounces. It is estimated at £20,000-25,000. Foster was educated at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and was a specialist on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
