Stamm sets pace in Around Alone
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (CNN) -- Swiss sailor Bernard Stamm continues his dominance of the Around Alone yacht race, leading the fleet in the third leg from Cape Town to Tauranga, New Zealand. Frenchman Thierry Dubois, sailing Solidaires, was third on Friday, followed by New Zealander Graham Dalton in Hexagon. Briton Emma Richards, the only woman in the single-handed race, was fifth, behind Italian Simone Bianchetti, with only American Bruce Schwab trailing in the Class I Open 60. Stamm and Dubois had come first and second respectively in the two previous legs of the circumnavigation. The 7,125-nautical-mile third leg from Cape Town to Tauranga started on December 14. It is likely to be one of the most dangerous legs of the race as the sailors cross the Southern Ocean. The 28,775-mile five-leg single-handed Around Alone race is held every four years. In Class II , the oldest competitor, 57-year-old Canadian John Dennis, retired on December 24 due to ongoing equipment failure on Bayer Ascensia. In an e-mail to organisers, Dennis said: "It is with great regret and enormous disappointment that I announce my retirement from the race. "From the start I've experienced equipment issues, and it's now too late for repairs to get to New Zealand safely and in time for the next leg." He has suffered from diabetes since 1996 and was attempting to become the first diabetic sailor to circumnavigate the globe by entering the Around Alone.
