Ballack doubt for Bayer

LEVERKUSEN, Germany -- German international Michael Ballack could miss Bayer Leverkusen's Champions League semifinal second leg against Manchester United on Tuesday night.

The midfielder, who was outstanding in last week's 2-2 first leg at Old Trafford, badly bruised his right foot during Bayer's defeat at Nuremberg on Saturday.

Ballack, 25, was Germany's leading scorer with six goals in qualifying for the World Cup finals and is seen as key to their hopes this summer. He also scored Bayer's opener in the first leg against United.

"He has a chance to be the best German player ever. I've played against Beckenbauer, Guenter Netzer and Wolfgang Overath and you name them, but Ballack is the most complete player," Bayer coach Klaus Toppmoeller told The Associated Press.

Successive league defeats have seen Bayer lose first place in the German league, but with home advantage for the second leg they are slight favourites to make next month's Champions League final at Hampden Park, Glasgow, where they would play Real Madrid or Barcelona.
