Real toast Zidane wonder goal

Zidane leaps on his teammates to celebrate Real's first goal

GLASGOW, Scotland (CNN) -- Zinedine Zidane scored a wonder goal as Real Madrid won the European Champions League.

The $66 million French superstar powered a brilliant left-foot volley into the Bayer Leverkusen net to send Real on the way to a 2-1 win at Glasgow's Hampden Park.

Zidane, France's 1998 World Cup hero and the world's most expensive player, had a quiet first half but lit up the stadium with his moment of breath-taking skill moments before half-time.

The goal was replayed several times on the stadium's screen during the interval and will have thrilled an estimated 350 million people watching on TV worldwide.

Zidane was voted man of the match and as he lifted the trophy fireworks exploded, ticker tape poured onto the pitch and "We are the Champions" blared out over the speakers.

Spanish striker Raul had given Real the lead after eight minutes, running onto a long ball down the left. His shot was soft but crept past keeper Hans-Jorg Butt into the corner of the goal.

But Bayer were level six minutes later when defender Lucio, who is in Brazil's World Cup squad, met Bernd Schneider's free kick with a glancing header into the top of the net.

Lucio's night ended in disappointment when he limped off in the last minute of normal time.

Germany's midfield powerhouse Michael Ballack worked hard to get Bayer back in the game.

They had come from behind in the quarterfinal and semifinal, however this was one hurdle too far even though Bayer threw everyone forward in a frantic seven minutes of injury time.

Butt dashed up to meet Schneider's free kick in injury time only to see his downward header bounce over the bar then goalkeeper Iker Casillas pulled off three acrobatic saves.

It was the ninth time Real have won Europe's top club competition. And in their centenary season, silverware was a must after they finished third in the Spanish league.

For Bayer it was another crushing blow after finishing second in the German league and losing the domestic cup final.
