Fine but no ban for Rivaldo

Rivaldo and Edmilson
Rivaldo (10) celebrates his winning penalty against Turkey with Admilson

ULSAN, South Korea -- Brazil striker Rivaldo has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($6,390) for faking an injury that got a Turkish opponent sent off -- but he has escaped a ban.

A disciplinary panel from FIFA, world football's governing body, announced the fine on Wednesday after studying video evidence.

It amounts to less than a day's pay for the Barcelona forward who has a multi-million dollar contract.

Rivaldo, whose late penalty sealed a 2-1 win for the four-times champions on Monday, could have been banned. (Match report)

He collapsed to the ground clutching his face as he waited to take a corner in the last minute of the game after Turkey's Hakan Unsal had kicked the ball at him.

The ball only hit his legs but the Turkish player was sent off -- Turkey's second red card of the game in Ulsan.

FIFA had urged referees to crack down on play acting.

Rivaldo admitted he faked being hurt to get Hakan sent off. After Wednesday's ruling he added: "I don't regret anything I did.

"I wasn't worried about suspension. I was the injured party. I don't even know why I was fined," he told The Associated Press. "In football, you have to be sly. It happens a lot and it will happen a lot in this World Cup."

Rivaldo's antics had outraged Turkey's players. A spokesman for the team told Reuters the fine should have been more but that Turkey now had to concentrate on the games ahead.
