Morientes double saves Spain

CHONJU, South Korea (CNN) -- Fernando Morientes was the toast of Madrid after coming on as a substitute to guide Spain through to the last 16 of the World Cup with a 3-1 win over Paraguay.

Spain were losing 1-0 when the Real Madrid striker was brought on for the second half and scored twice to make it two wins out of two. Fernando Hierro scored the third with a late penalty.

Morientes took just eight minutes to make his mark, heading in a corner to equalise after Carles Puyol's own goal had given Paraguay a first-half lead.

Morientes should have put Spain ahead on 64 minutes when put through on the left of the penalty area. He chipped the ball over Paraguay keeper Jose Luis Chilavert but also over the bar.

But he did get the second four minutes later, turning in a left-wing cross as Chilavert flapped and missed the ball. It was Morientes' 16th goal in 21 internationals.

Chilavert tried to make amends 12 minutes from time when he moved up to take one of his trademark free-kicks. A goalkeeper has never scored in a World Cup finals match and Casillas dived to his left to make the save.

Two minutes later Chilavert was picking the ball out of his net as Hierro blasted in his second penalty of the finals after Real Madrid's Raul had been pulled back as he turned in the area.

Puyol's own-goal was the fourth of the finals so far but he could do little as after keeper Iker Casillas parried Francisco Arce's 10th minute cross-shot onto the defender's shin and into the net.

Spain beat Slovenia 3-1 victory in their opening Group B game while Paraguay drew their first match against South Africa 2-2.
