SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- Turkey qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time after a 3-0 victory over whipping boys China.

The win, coupled with Costa Rica's 5-2 defeat to tournament favourites Brazil in Thursday's other Group C match, meant they finished runner-up to the four-times champions. (Brazil v Costa Rica report)

There were emotional scenes at the final whistle as Turkish players hugged each other on the pitch while in Ankara thousands of fans filled the streets. (Full story)

They had gone into the final group game with just one point after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Brazil and a 1-1 draw against Costa Rica.
