Poland win but USA progress
DAEJEON, South Korea -- The United States scraped into the knockout stages of the World Cup despite being beaten 3-1 by Poland. They go on to face Mexico after Portugal, who had two men sent off, lost 1-0 to South Korea in Group D's other match. (Full story) Two goals in the first five minutes and a third in the second-half gave Poland, already out of the tournament, a win to salvage some pride before flying home. Nigerian-born striker Emmanuel Olisadebe opened the scoring with a fierce shot off the underside of the crossbar in the third minute. Pawel Kryszalowicz turned in a Jacek Krzynowek cross from the left wing two minutes later.
Poland almost went three up before the break when forward Maciej Zurawski drove a low shot against the post in the 28th minute, the ball cannoning off keeper Brad Friedel's legs. In the second-half Poland did get the third. Marcin Zewlakow, who had been on the pitch for less than a minute, scored with his first touch -- a header from a left-wing cross. Friedel denied Poland a fourth by saving a Zurawski penalty in the 76th minute after Kryszalowicz had been pulled down by Tony Sanneh. Landon Donovan, who had a goal disallowed in the first-half, scored a consolation goal on 83 minutes. But their real consolation was the result did not matter. Poland: Radoslaw Majdan, Tomasz Klos, Jacek Zielinksi, Arkadiusz Glowacki, Jacek Krzynowek, Maciej Murawski, Cezary Kucharski, Marek Kozminski, Emmanuel Olisadebe, Maciej Zurawski, Pavel Kryszalowicz. United States: Brad Friedel, Frankie Hejduk, Eddie Pope, Jeff Agoos, Tony Sanneh, John O'Brien, Earnie Stewart, Landon Donovan, Claudi Reyna, Clint Mathis, Brian McBride.
