Senegal golden goal dumps Swedes
OITA, Japan -- Senegal are into the last eight of the World Cup finals after beating Sweden 2-1 with a golden goal in extra-time. The winning goal -- the first to be scored by either team during the period of extra time played at the end of normal playing time -- was Henri Camara's second of the match. The 103rd minute strike put Senegal in to the quarterfinals -- the first African nation to reach the stage since Cameroon in 1990. The low shot past Magnus Hedman creeped inside the post to spark wild celebrations and set up a match against Japan or Turkey who play on Tuesday. But Magnus Svensson could have already settled the tie when he received the ball inside the penalty box, turned his marker to shoot and was denied only by the woodwork.
El Hadji Diouf could also have decided the game but his shot, after nutmegging his marker, was screwed wide. Neither side could conjure up the winner in the second-half after first-half goals from Henrik Larssen and Camara. Larssen opened the scoring with a near post header from a corner after he rose in front of keeper Tony Sylva. Sweden were pegged back with a skillfully taken goal from Camara, who controlled the ball on his chest in the penalty area before shooting low between two Swedish defenders, sending the ball just inside the near post despite Magnus Hedman full stretch dive Before the equaliser Andreas Jakobsson had bundled Diouf off the ball inside the area, but Paraguayan referee Ubaldo Aquino waved away penalty appeals. Papa Bouba Diop did get the ball in the net, after latching on to Hadji Diouf's low ball, but his effort was ruled offside. The second-half of a game played in sweltering heat was open but with chances at a premium.
Diouf's edge of the box free kick was tipped over by Hedman, Marcus Allback's volley was saved by the diving Sylva, and goalmouth melee saw the ball out for a Senegalese corner. Swedish substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic had the best chance to break the deadlock but chose to shoot from a narrow angle as unmarked Larssen yelled for a pass in front of goal. Sweden came into the game with the confidence borne from having topped the 'group of death' which saw the premature return home of Argentina, tournament favourites when the competition kicked off. The West African underdogs have also shown their pedigree, most notably with the opening game win over France, a result which helped put the reigning champions on an early flight home.
