Overview: What is the history of Salt Lake City, Utah? Why was Salt Lake City chosen as the site for the 2002 Olympic Games? Have students research the history, geography and culture of Utah and its cities and major sites. Challenge students to create a travel brochure for their school library.
Curriculum Connections: Current Events, U.S. History
Have students read the story, "The History of Salt Lake City," and answer the following questions:
1.What city is hosting the 2002 Olympic Games? Who is Orrin Hatch? When and by whom was Salt Lake City founded? Why did this group of pioneers end up in Utah? What is the predominant religion in Salt Lake City? Why is Salt Lake City referred to as the "crossroads of the West"? How has the city changed in recent years?
2.How long did Salt Lake City vie for the chance to host the Olympic Games? Why is the city an ideal spot for the Winter Olympics? What are some of the responsibilities associated with hosting the Olympic Games?
3.Point out to students that Salt Lake City is one of Utah's many fascinating sites. Refer students to print and online resources, including the Web sites below, to learn about the history, geography and culture of Utah. Group students. Have each group create a travel brochure for one of Utah's cities or major sites, such as Zion National Park. Have each group include information about its area's location, history, culture, highlights and infrastructure. Compile the brochures and make them available to the school library.
