Olympic questions and answers

February 25, 2002
Web posted at: 4:49 PM EST (2149 GMT)

Overview: CNN Student News' Michael McManus responds to students' inquiries about the Olympics. Generate a list of questions on Olympic-related topics to which students would like McManus's responses. Have students consult multimedia resources and/or professional experts to find the answers to these questions.

Curriculum Connections: Current Events

Have students watch the CNN Student News video, "Olympic questions and answers," and answer the following questions:

1. Do Olympic rules have to change when sports equipment is technologically improved? Does physics play a part in snowboarding? What was the most number of medals won by the U.S. in a Winter Olympics?

2. If your students watched this week's CNN Student News segments on the 2002 Olympics, have them critique the coverage by answering the following questions and explaining their answers:

  • Which segments did you like the most?
  • Which did you like the least?
  • What topics would you have liked to have seen covered?
  • 3. Challenge groups of students to generate a list of questions on Olympic-related topics about which they would like to know more. After students share their questions, assign pairs of students different questions from the list. Instruct the pairs to consult multimedia resources or professional experts to find the answers to these questions. Have students share their information with the class.

    4. Teachers: You can access discussion questions and educational activities on the Science of Snowboarding at the February 14, 2002 CNN Student News Guide.

For additional discussion questions and teaching activities on the 2002 Olympics Games, check out CNNstudentnews.com and the CNN Student News Guides for February 11, 2002, February 12, 2002 and February 13, 2002.
