Overview: Hurricane Isidore is downgraded to a tropical storm. Residents along the U.S. Gulf Coast brace for Tropical Storm Isidore, which could cause life-threatening floods. Send your students on a multimedia scavenger hunt to learn more about hurricanes. Have students create posters to educate their peers about these types of storms.
1. What category of hurricane was Isidore when it hit Mexico's Yucatan? How did the storm change as it moved North? Where is New Orleans located? What major problems could Tropical Storm Isidore inflict on residents of New Orleans? What measures have the people of New Orleans taken to prepare for Isidore?
2. Send your students on a multimedia scavenger hunt to learn more about hurricanes. To help guide their research, ask them to locate the answers to the following questions:
What regions of the world are most susceptible to hurricanes?
When is hurricane season?
How does a hurricane develop?
What are the different classifications of hurricanes?
What are the differences between a tropical depression, tropical storm, and a hurricane?
What is the most violent part of the hurricane?
What factors "feed" a hurricane and make it stronger?
What factors tend to make a hurricane lose intensity and fall apart?
Why are some hurricanes more dangerous than others?
After students share their information, have groups of students create posters to educate their peers about hurricanes. Display the posters in your school library.
