This week on CNN Student News: How safe is our food?

(CNN) -- In the wake of September 11, security has been upgraded everywhere from airports to nuclear power plants, but is our food safe from terrorists? How safe is the meat we eat? Are foods imported from overseas free of toxic chemicals? Those are the questions answered in the week-long series "How Safe Is Our Food?" on CNN Student News, beginning Monday, April 15 and airing through Friday, April 19. The series explores the dangers and looks at possible solutions.

Monday, April 15: Our food at risk -- From acres of open wheat fields to supermarkets with rows of unpackaged vegetables, this story tracks the risks to our foods each step of the way. Are farmers and food processors doing enough to protect our food? We speak with a grocer about protecting food in the store and with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. CNN Student News anchor Michael McManus reports.

Tuesday April 16: Keeping our food safe -- Michael Doyle, director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia, shows new ways of fighting natural and human-induced disease. We look at mad cow disease, the controversy over irradiation of foods and the recent explosion of "organic" foods. We explore what the government is doing to protect food and what consumers can do to protect themselves. CNN Student News anchor Michael McManus reports.
