Hippy-cool: Sui swings into spring
November 9, 1998 NEW YORK (CNN) -- The ever fickle Anna Sui blends some of her favorite influences, psychedelic hippy and a dash of glam rock, and then adds a pinch of what she calls good ol' Americana to create a vibrant, eclectic spring/summer collection. Her accessories are witty, her prints are whimsical and her outfits pay tribute to Claire McCardell. McCardell, who worked in the 1950s, is considered the first woman of American sportswear. "I did a lot of research on Claire McCardell, which was just so exciting for me because I wasn't really familiar with her clothing, and there's a new exhibit that's about to open," she says. "So I got kind of a preview and went digging through the whole [Fashion Institute of Technology] library. It was a learning experience for me."
Sui uses high-tech fabrics throughout her collection, but says the look of denim also makes a strong statement this season.
The designer says she's nearly obsessed by accessories. She does shoes from flats to platforms, decorates handbags, makes jewelry with features and beads and puts hippy, flower-child wreaths in her models' hair. "It's a touch of fantasy that you want," Sui says. "It adds just a touch of color, and you feel very feminine."
